All Mountain, Enduro, Sacred Valley

Highlights

Ride. Learn. Explore Peru.

Peru is an extraordinary destination for mountain biking.

Its combination of dramatic geography, thousands of years of history, living culture, and incredible mountain landscapes creates a unique setting for riding. The Andes Mountains, one of the longest mountain ranges on Earth, cross the country from north to south and offer an enormous variety of terrain.

In Peru, many mountain trails have remained in their natural state, shaped over time by rain, wind, erosion, and generations of local use. There are no perfectly manicured bike-park trails here. Instead, you’ll find natural terrain, ancient paths, rocks, steps, loose sections, technical corners, and countless lines to discover.

This is where Wayo MTB Camp comes in.

Eduardo “Wayo” Stein, a 14-time Peruvian National Downhill Champion with bronze medals at the 2001 Pan-American MTB Championships (Elite) and the 2010 UCI Masters Downhill World Championships, has spent decades riding, racing, and exploring the trails around Cusco and the Sacred Valley.

During this four-day MTB camp, Wayo will ride with you, analyze your riding, and help you develop the skills you want to improve. The program is adapted to your experience and goals, whether you want to become more confident on technical terrain, improve your speed, or simply have more control and fun on the bike.

We’ll work on the fundamentals that make a difference on the trail, including:

  • Balance and bike control
  • Body position
  • Braking technique
  • Cornering and line selection
  • Technical climbs and descents
  • Steps, rocks, and natural obstacles
  • Jumps and drops
  • Reading the trail and choosing the right line

Throughout the camp, we’ll ride different types of terrain around Cusco and the Sacred Valley, putting the techniques into practice on real mountain trails.

Wayo will be there to demonstrate techniques, explain how to approach different obstacles, and help you develop the confidence and control to ride more safely, more efficiently, and with more fun.

Because the best way to improve your mountain biking is to ride, learn, and practice on the trail.

Four days. Incredible trails. Personal coaching. One unforgettable MTB experience in Peru.

Ride with Wayo. Improve your skills. Have more fun on your bike.

Welcome to Cusco—and welcome to Wayo MTB Camp!

Wayo and the Inkas Adventures team will be waiting for you at Cusco Airport, ready to welcome you and start this incredible mountain bike adventure.

After meeting you at the airport, we’ll welcome you with a traditional coca tea before transferring you to your hotel for check-in.

Then it’s time to get the bikes ready.

Our guides and experienced mechanics will help you build your bike and dial in your setup, making sure your cockpit, suspension, controls, and other key components are properly adjusted before we hit the trails.

After lunch near Cusco’s Main Plaza, we get ready for our first two rides of the camp.

These trails are perfect for getting started with the coaching while having plenty of fun. We’ll work on cornering, berms, small jumps, steep sections, loose terrain, body position, and bike control, all while riding through spectacular landscapes with incredible views over Cusco.

On the second ride, we’ll descend toward the city following ancient mountain trails before finishing with something completely different: Urban Downhill into Cusco, riding all the way into the heart of the city and finishing near the Main Plaza.

After our first day on the bike, we’ll enjoy a great dinner together, with some of Cusco’s excellent food and local craft beer—the perfect way to finish the day.

Two rides. First coaching session. Ancient trails. Urban Downhill.

Welcome to Peru. Let’s ride!

Three trails. Three descents. One incredible day in the Andes.

We leave Cusco early in the morning and head toward the Sacred Valley for another full day of riding, coaching, and fun.

Today is all about Downhill. We’ll ride three different trails, each with its own character, terrain, and challenges. These are trails we love riding ourselves, and they offer the perfect terrain to put yesterday’s skills into practice while continuing to develop your riding.

Throughout the day, Wayo will work with you on line choice, cornering, braking, body position, and bike control, helping you understand how to approach different sections of the trail with more confidence and control.

As we descend through the mountains, the landscape changes constantly. We’ll ride through spectacular Andean terrain, with incredible views over the Sacred Valley and plenty of opportunities to stop and appreciate the history and scenery around us.

And the fun doesn’t stop after the first run. We’ll keep riding until the light starts to fade, making the most of every trail and every opportunity to improve.

Three epic descents, amazing landscapes, and a full day of riding with Wayo.

Ride more. Learn more. Descend deeper into the Sacred Valley.

Cross the mountains. Ride into the Lares Valley. Finish in the hot springs.

Today we cross the mountains and descend into the spectacular Lares Valley, one of our favorite areas for mountain biking in the Cusco region.

We discovered this trail several years ago, and it has become a regular part of our riding programs. We start high in the mountains at approximately 4,400 meters (14,435 ft) and begin a long, flowing descent through the entire valley.

The trail is a fantastic combination of flowing singletrack, loose and rocky terrain, narrow sections, and natural rock steps, giving us plenty of opportunities to work on different riding techniques.

But this ride is about much more than the trail.

As we descend, we pass through small communities and meet local people who live and work at elevations above 4,000 meters. We’ll see farmers working their fields, traditional agricultural landscapes, and a way of life that remains closely connected to the mountains.

We finish our first ride at the Lares Hot Springs, where we’ll have lunch and take a break.

In the afternoon, we head up into another valley for our second ride of the day, finishing once again near the hot springs. After a full day on the bike, there’s no better way to recover than with a relaxing soak in the warm thermal waters of Lares.

During the day, we’ll also focus on important mountain biking skills such as reading the terrain, orientation and navigation, finding the right line, riding loose and rocky surfaces, controlling the bike through narrow sections, and negotiating rock steps.

After riding, we’ll spend the night at a hotel in Lares village.

Start high. Descend deep. Ride through local communities. Relax in the hot springs.

Put your skills to the test on one of our favorite Inca trails.

Today is the final day of the Wayo MTB Camp, and we’re finishing with a big one: the famous Lares Downhill.

We start high in the mountains at approximately 4,400 meters (14,435 ft) and begin a spectacular descent along an ancient Inca trail that follows the Lares Valley all the way toward Calca, in the heart of the Sacred Valley.

This is a long, flowing, and incredibly fun trail, with constantly changing terrain and plenty of opportunities to put everything we have worked on during the camp into practice. From line selection and body position to braking, cornering, bike control, and reading the terrain, today is about bringing all those skills together and riding with more confidence.

As we descend, the landscape changes dramatically—from the high Andes to greener valleys and traditional communities below.

Once we reach Calca, our bus will be waiting to take us back toward Cusco. But we’re not finished yet.

Before heading to the airport for your flight home, we’ll squeeze in one final descent around Cusco—the perfect way to finish four days of riding, coaching, and adventure.

By now, you should feel more comfortable, more confident, and more in control of your bike, with a better understanding of how to approach different terrain and choose your lines.

The goal of the camp is not just to teach you techniques. It is to help you understand your bike, read the trail, make better decisions, and have more fun riding it.

One last descent. One final test. One unforgettable way to finish the camp.

Ride with Wayo. Improve your skills. Ride with more confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

You’re coming to ride in some of the most remote and spectacular areas of Peru, where bike shops and spare parts may be unavailable or very limited. Being properly prepared can make a big difference during your trip.

Prepare Your Bike Before the Trip

Before traveling to Peru, we strongly recommend having your bike thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and serviced.

Check all components for wear and make sure everything is working properly, especially your brakes, drivetrain, suspension, and wheels.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Chain
  • Brake pads
  • Cables and housings
  • Tires
  • Brake and shifting systems
  • Suspension
  • Bearings and other worn components

If any component is close to the end of its service life, replace it before your trip. It is much easier to deal with maintenance at home than on a remote mountain trail.

Tires & Tubeless Setup

We recommend bringing new or nearly new tires suitable for technical mountain terrain. For most of our rides, we recommend tires around 2.40–2.50″ wide with good sidewall protection, such as Maxxis tires with EXO, DD, DH or equivalent protection.

A tubeless setup is strongly recommended.

If you already use tubeless tires, check that your sealant is fresh and has not dried out before your trip. We also recommend carrying a spare tube even if you ride tubeless.

Spare Parts & Tools

We carry a selection of common bike parts and tools on our tours, but some components are specific to each bike and can be difficult to find in Peru.

We strongly recommend bringing the following:

  • 1 spare derailleur hanger specific to your bike
  • 2 sets of brake pads
  • 2 spare inner tubes, even if you use tubeless
  • Tire patches and a pump
  • Tubeless repair plugs and a tubeless tool
  • A bike multi-tool
  • Any special tools required for your particular bike
  • Other bike-specific spare parts you may need

If your bike uses a proprietary component or unusual standard, bring a spare whenever possible.

Riding Gear

For the riding itself, we recommend bringing:

  • Helmet, gloves, and riding glasses
  • Full-face helmet — optional, but recommended for more technical Downhill and Enduro rides
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads — optional
  • Two pairs of riding shoes
  • At least four sets of riding clothes
  • Small backpack or hydration pack with a water reservoir
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Lightweight thermal jacket for colder mountain temperatures
  • Headlamp or bike light
  • Sunblock — SPF 50 or higher
  • Insect repellent

Your backpack should have enough space for the essentials you may need during the day, including water, food, basic tools, an extra layer, and your rain jacket.

Be Ready for Changing Conditions

Peru’s mountains can take you through dramatic changes in altitude, temperature, weather, and terrain, sometimes during the same ride.

A warm, sunny morning can turn into cold, windy, or rainy conditions at higher elevations. Being prepared with the right clothing and equipment will allow you to enjoy the ride comfortably and safely.

Come prepared. We’ll take care of the rest—and get you riding

The best way to bring your mountain bike to Peru is to transport it in a bike box or bike travel case. You can use a sturdy cardboard bike box or a hard-shell bike case. Both options can work well, as long as your bike is properly packed and protected.

Take your time when packing your bike. The goal is to prevent scratches, impacts, or damage to vulnerable components such as the derailleur, derailleur hanger, brakes, fork, and frame.

Use plenty of padding around the bike and protect any parts that could come into contact with each other. Your riding equipment can also be useful as additional padding—knee pads, elbow pads, riding clothes, gloves, and other soft gear can help protect the bike while saving space in your luggage.

We also recommend using Velcro straps, zip ties, or similar straps to keep loose components securely together inside the box.

How We Pack Our Bikes

This is the basic process we use when preparing a mountain bike for air travel:

1. Remove the pedals and wheels.
Take the pedals off and remove both wheels.

2. Remove the disc rotors.
We recommend removing the brake rotors from the wheels and protecting them separately to prevent them from being bent or damaged during transport.

3. Prepare the suspension.
If required by your bike or travel case, adjust the suspension according to the manufacturer’s recommended procedure for air travel and transportation. Do not simply release air from the suspension without checking the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Lower or remove the seatpost.
Depending on the bike and the available space in the box, lower the seatpost completely into the frame or remove it.

5. Remove the handlebar.
Take the handlebar off the stem and secure it carefully to the frame.

6. Protect the derailleur and hanger.
We recommend removing the derailleur hanger when appropriate for your bike and travel case, or otherwise protecting the derailleur and hanger very carefully. These are particularly vulnerable to impacts during transportation.

7. Protect the bike.
Wrap the frame, fork, rear triangle, and other vulnerable areas with appropriate padding. Pay particular attention to the bottom of the fork, rear derailleur area, and other parts that may come into contact with the bike box or other components.

8. Place the bike inside the box or case.
Make sure the bike fits properly and that nothing is being forced into position. Check that the fork, rear triangle, derailleur area, and other vulnerable parts have enough clearance and protection.

Make the Most of Your Bike Luggage

Depending on the size and weight limits of your bike box or travel case, you can use some of the available space to carry your riding equipment.

Items such as riding shoes, knee and elbow pads, helmet, gloves, riding clothes, and your hydration backpack can often be packed around the bike to provide additional protection while making better use of the available space.

Take your time and pack carefully. A well-protected bike is much more likely to arrive in Peru ready to ride.

And once you arrive, we’ll take care of getting you and your bike ready for the trails.

For our tours, we carefully select comfortable three-star hotels where you can relax and recover after a day on the trails. We look for quiet, comfortable rooms in convenient locations, ideally close to the main attractions, restaurants, and services you may want to enjoy during your stay.

In some destinations, we choose hotels outside the city because they offer something special—unique character, beautiful surroundings, or a more authentic experience that fits the adventure.

Camping Nights

Some of our tours also include camping in remote areas, allowing us to spend the night closer to the trails and experience the mountains in a completely different way.

When camping is included, we provide four-person tents for two people, giving you plenty of space and comfort, along with mattresses and sleeping bags suitable for cold mountain conditions.

We also provide all meals during camping nights, including dinner and breakfast, so you can relax and enjoy the experience without having to worry about carrying or preparing your own food.

Whether you are staying in a comfortable hotel or camping under the stars, we make sure you have a good place to rest and recharge for the next day’s adventure.

We Are Locals

There is something special about riding with people who know the mountains from the saddle.

We know the trails, the terrain, the communities, and the conditions. We know where to ride, how to adapt the routes to different levels, and how to find the lines that make each trail fun.

Most importantly, we are here. We ride these mountains ourselves.

We Are Professional Mountain Bikers

Mountain biking isn’t just our business—it is our passion and our way of life.

You ride with people who truly understand mountain biking.

We Are Constantly Exploring

We don’t simply ride the same routes over and over again.

We are constantly searching for new trails, ancient paths, forgotten roads, new connections, and new lines throughout Peru.

Some of the routes we ride are trails we have discovered and developed ourselves. This spirit of exploration allows us to create experiences that go beyond the standard tourist routes.

Come ride the Peru we know—not just the Peru everyone else rides.

We Practice Sustainable Tourism

Responsible and sustainable tourism is one of our core principles.

We work closely with local communities, businesses, and individuals to create tourism opportunities that contribute to local economies while respecting the environment and local culture.

We believe that riding through these communities is a privilege. We respect the people, traditions, landscapes, and places where we operate, and we strive to minimize our environmental and cultural impact.

Your Safety Comes First

Mountain biking in Peru can take you into remote and challenging environments, so preparation and safety are essential.

Our guides have training in Wilderness First Aid and CPR, and we carry essential safety and communication equipment on our trips. On selected remote routes, we also have access to satellite communication and maintain connections with emergency and evacuation services when available.

Our vehicles, bikes, tools, and safety equipment are carefully prepared for the conditions we encounter on the trails.

We cannot eliminate the inherent risks of mountain biking, but we take preparation, safety, and emergency response seriously.
